Biblionne is pleased to present the female gender-themed list of books, photographs, and periodical editions for Transatlantic Virtual Book Fair to purchase.

Being founded and run by women Biblionne is happy to show their small collection dedicated to the evolving role of women in pre-revolutionary and soviet Russia.

The collection opens with the rare edition about so-called Russian women destiny “Bab'ia Dolia” [Woman's Lot] written by Tatiana Kuzminskaia, the famous prototype of Tolstoy`s Natasha Rostova, and published by the master himself. The book is on a par with early XX century books about the role of women in politics and other male-dominated spheres (“Woman and Politics”, “Women's Right at Sea”, etc.).

Books about the capacity of women and girls in Civil and Second World War are of special interest (“Woman with a Rifle”, “Women Warriors of the Red Army”, “Woman in the Civil War”, etc.).

Alongside with them stand the elegant pop-up book designed by V. Zotova and issued by the Museum for the Protection of Motherhood and Infancy in Moscow and the Japanese edition of Pushkin`s “The Queen of Spades” illustrated by the Russian-born painter and graphic avant-garde artist Varvara Bubnova.

The whole collection symbolically encloses itself in one of the editions presented. “A Woman As a Great Power” says the cover of the recommended literature list prepared by the Research Institute of Librarianship and Recommended Bibliography of People’s Commissariat for Education in 1936.
Almost 100 year later we celebrate the message.

All the books presented appear to be extremely rare shedding the bright light on the history of women`s movement in Russia on both sides of the printing press.
